Structural Editing A structural edit looks at the big picture. I will improve the structure and organisation of your manuscript, ensuring that your ideas flow in a logical progression and the reader can easily follow your narrative.
Whether your piece is fiction or non-fiction, I will take into account the purpose and audience of your text.
I will offer constructive comments on how you can improve the overall structure and presentation of your manuscript, and can assist with rewriting.
This is the most time-consuming type of editing, and often involves a lot of discussion between the author and the editor.
Proofreading A proofread gives your writing that final polish. I will give your manuscript a final check before it is released to the world.
A proofread will ensure that there are no remaining typographical errors, all headings and capitalisations are consistent, and that layout is clear.
Academic Editing I have edited academic monographs in many fields, including history, politics, cultural affairs, science, education, psychology, literature, economics and English.
I do not edit research theses or essays.
Copywriting I write and edit copy for advertising brochures, websites, blogs and newsletters.
Copyediting A copyedit looks at the details. I will improve the expression of ideas, ensuring that your thoughts are clearly communicated in your writing.
Copyediting does not involve substantial rewriting, but will improve the style and accuracy of your text.
Your text will be thoroughly checked for grammar, punctuation, spelling, sense, consistency and syntax.
If your manuscript has been accepted for publication already, I will ensure that it conforms to the preferred house style of your publisher.
This is my most commonly requested service.
Manuscript Assessment A manuscript assessment provides high-level feedback. I will read your entire manuscript and provide a detailed report of 2000 to 2500 words, assessing the strengths of your manuscript and the areas that need improvement.
The report may include advice on plot, character, pace, writing style, dialogue, use of research, presentation, readership and publishing possibilities.
An assessment does not involve editing your manuscript.
I am experienced in assessing both fiction and non-fiction.
